Kildonagh House is steeped in the legal and political history of Sligo. Originally called Bath Lodge it overlooks the main shipping channel, Cummeen strand, Knocknarea and over Sligo Bay. Kildonagh House was originally built by the Wynne Family of Hazelwood House and was known to be a favourite location of Lady Sarah Wynne. Bath Lodge was described as being sited on an eminence a few perches from the sea and the Wynne family used it for both recreational activities and as a bathing lodge.

Throughout the 19th century it was rented to a succession of tenants including Captain Pritchett of the Sligo Militia. In 1879 George Moloney leased the house. He was a resident magistrate and was involved in the state trial of Michael Davitt and the Irish National Land League.

In the 1900s the Wynnes sold off the house to William Fenton who bought it for his son. His son stayed in it until the outbreak of World War 1 when he went to the war but never returned. In the early 20th century Colonel Hayford Thorold lived in Kildonagh with his Italian wife Elizabeth and two children. Rupert, his youngest son, subsequently achieved prominence as a writer of fiction. By 1917 John Tarrant had purchased the house and lived there until 1948 and renamed it to Kildonagh House. Ronan Tarrant (son of John Tarrant) owned the house from 1948-1960 and in 1960 the house was purchased by Albert Bothwell of Meldrums in Castle Street Sligo.
